As a magician, often there are questions that
resurface amongst first-time magician bookers. To help answer
some of these questions, we've prepared for you a "Magicians FAQ" ...
Q: Is there really an
oath to secrecy?
A: Yes.
It's the first rule all budding magicians learn: a magician
must never reveal his (or her!) secrets; and the Magic Circle takes
this fundamental code very seriously. In fact every now and
then there are precedings to oust a magician from the Magic Circle who
has willingly revealed secrets to the public.
Q: So, you're a central London magician. How far
afield do you go?
A: As a
magician, I go pretty much wherever the booking is. Anywhere
in the world. I consider travel costs and time in the quote
for far-away locations.
Q:
You are a close-up magician, have a solo cabaret magic show and a double-act stage illusionists act. What type of
magic is best for my event?
A: To know
what to recommend for a client's party, I usually have a chat with them
to see what sort of things they're thinking of for the event.
I've just about seen it all (famous last words!) so if you give me a
synopsis of how many people will be in attendance and what else might
be in mind for the night, I'll be able to consult you about what type
of magic, at what point in the party and perhaps even if you need more
than one magician to cover all the guests.
Q: How can I know what magician is right for my event?
A: There are
as many different KINDS of magicians out there as there are
magicians. Particularly with close-up magicians there is a
great amount of interaction between your guests and the magician so the
personality of the magician is as important as how good the magic the
magician does. Have a chat with your prospective magician on
the phone to get a feeling for his or her personality and
watch him performing and interacting with audiences if he has a demo
video. In addition to this, make sure your prospective
magician has many different written references from past clients, see
what they have to say about the magician's impact on their
event. Finally, look at how extensive is
the magicians CV and what variety of work s/he has
done. Once you've added up all these factors,
you'll be in a good position to decide the right magician for your
event.
Q: What is a close-up magician?
A: A close-up magician is
sometimes also called a table magician or 'mix-n-mingle magician'.
Whatever name you use, a close-up magician performs magic for
small groups while your guests either mingle with drinks or are seated
at tables. It is high-impact and interactive, as it happens only inches
from the audience’s eyes and often in their very own hands!
Christopher is a close-up magician who performs with a variety of
objects including cards and items borrowed from the audience.
It’s flexi-time, depending on your needs, the number of
guests, and the length of your event. For more information on

Q:
What is a cabaret magician?
A: A cabaret
magician is the term used to call a stand-up magic act that is
performed usually for a seated audience of everyone in the room
watching at once. It's usually slightly larger scale magic
than close-up magic so it's visible to the audience. For more
information on this type of magician act by Christopher Howell, click: CABARET MAGICIAN
Q:
What is a stage magician act or illusionist?
A: Stage magicians are also
sometimes called illusionists. Stage magicians present even
larger scale works than cabaret magicians. Illusionists are
known for doing stage magic such as 'sawing the woman in half' and
their work is visible for large audiences usually even without a
projection camera. There aren't a great deal of UK
illusionists or stage magicians, and Christopher's act is decidedly one
of a kind. Not only does the act feature magic, but it also
combines the magic of singing and acrobatics. Check out
Christopher's stage illusionist 'alter-ego' a.k.a. "Amazing Norvil"
with his mischievous sidekick "Josephine". For more

Q:
Do you perform as a magician for children?
A: I'm in a rare position amongst
professional magicians to say that I do actually enjoy performing for
children. My approach as a London children's entertainer is
to perform my magic as part of a fantastical adventure story, rather
than just performing one trick after the next. I let the
children's imaginations carry the show and the REAL magic is that I get
even 3 and 4 year olds to sit there and listen and watch intently for
35 minutes! If your party is mostly for adults but there will
be some children, I make sure I have some magic especially for them as
well. For more information on my magician shows for children,
